Welcome to Gilead! What is Texas SB 8?

Updated: Sep 4, 2021

Texas SB 8, known as the "heartbeat bill" went into effect September 1, 2021 and is the country's most restrictive abortion law. The law says that no woman in Texas has the right to make her own reproductive choices beyond 6 weeks, or the time that Texas lawmakers think heartbeat is detectable. The truth is, most women don't find out they are pregnant until 6 weeks or beyond and at 6 weeks, the fluttering detected on sonogram is not a formed heart, but pulsating cells that will eventually become a heart.

Additionally, this law does not allow for enforcement by the government, but deputizes regular citizens to accuse a woman of abortion, whether it is true or not, and allows that person to file a lawsuit against a provider or anyone who helps the woman. What is the reward? $10,000 in damages TO THE PERSON WHO FILED THE SUIT. How insane is that?

This law does not have any exemptions for rape or incest.

The same week, the Supreme Court decided to allow Texas' barbaric law to remain in effect, violating the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court precedence. Since then, multiple states have reported that they will also seek similar laws in their next sessions. This means that Roe v. Wade is threatened. Women's Reproductive Rights are threatened.

It is up to all of us to take a stand. Protests in the streets. Protests at the Capitol. This is not 1950!
